Gabinete Voula Papaioannou

01/07/2021

Between October 2019 and September 2020, the Gabinete Voula Papaioannou exhibition showed the public for the first time in our country the work of the Greek photographer Voula Papaioannou (Lamía, 1898-Athens, 1990), thanks to a co-production between the Luis Seoane Foundation de A Coruña and La Virreina Center de la Imatge de Barcelona, in collaboration with the Benaki Museum in Athens. After some beginnings that collect the classical past of Greece through its archaeological remains, the author will document key events in the history of her country such as the German invasion, the civil war and the postwar period. Responsible for the archive and custody of her work since 1976, the Benaki Museum in Athens has provided more than 300 black and white photographs selected by the exhibition’s curator for the exhibition. This catalog includes the images of the exhibition project and three essays, in a co-edition of the three institutions responsible for the exhibition.
