Pierre-Elie de Pibrac has lived in immersion for over a year in different families of the azucareros community in Cuba – sugar industrial workers and revolutionaries from the outset. Through this experience, the photographer questions the end of utopia in a population that has believed and worked towards the incarnation of the Castroism dream. Made with a large-format camera, colour portraits of the community punctuate the B&W “reportage” of their daily life where time feels like suspended: the inside of domestic houses, dormitories, abandoned streets overrun by grass, former production sites, the section of sugar cane in the fields… This project show how the Cuban population grasps today their everyday life, which take they have on their recent history. A short novel by author Zoé Valdés, inspired by these photographs, gives another light on this visual journey.
